“In 1999 I decided to out-source our entire technical department. Now, I create the content and Dayspring takes care of the rest. I am a very happy web publisher.”

Client
The Publisher of Global Directions, Inc., a San Francisco-based developer of Web properties, including the online travel magazine ThingsAsian.com and ThingsAsianPress.com.
Situation
Passionate about Asia, with a vision for a variety of travel oriented business opportunities, Global Directions, Inc. sought a long term technical and creative partnership with Dayspring. Their diverse and expanding business plans ranged from Web development to book design to product design. With a small corporate staff, GDI needed a reliable, multi-dimensional partner who could shepherd a project from idea to execution, whether it be a Flash Web enhancement, a travel guide, or a series of richly designed note cards.
Vision
Inspired by the deep content and rich photography contributed to GDI’s ThingsAsian.com Web site, GDI wanted to begin publishing Asia-related travel books. An idea that began with one collection of travel stories soon grew to include a series of note cards, travel guides and children’s picture books. While GDI could invest in product development and book publication, their small staff could not coordinate a growing collection of authors, photographers, book production staff, graphic designers and printers.
In addition, GDI looked to creatively bridge its Web and book content, drawing consumer attention to both business ventures by linking related information.
Execution
As a long term partner, Dayspring understood the many dimensions of GDI’s entrepreneurial plans. Seeking to support GDI’s business, Dayspring agreed to oversee their product and book design ventures from concept to publication. Dayspring’s graphic designers began by establishing a look and feel for each book series, emphasizing a visual design concept that supports GDI’s existing brand identity. Dayspring also provided copywriting and editing services, graphic design, book production and print process management. Working closely with local and international printers, Dayspring’s design team insured a final product that exceeded the client’s expectations.
To enhance each book’s market appeal, Dayspring’s graphic designers matched the books with marketing collateral, bookmarks and product-specific Web pages. Dayspring also produced web content and Flash animation for ThingsAsian.com based on information introduced in each book.
- Travel books
- Dayspring worked with ThingsAsian authors to create a line of travel story collections and travel guides. The most recent, To Asia With Love, is currently in its 3rd printing.
- Children’s books
- Dayspring provided book design, art, copywriting, book production and printing oversight for GDI’s fledgling series of children’s books. My Mom Is A Dragon is the first in a series of three titles introducing children to Chinese culture. Dayspring supported the book’s launch on the ThingsAsian Web site, producing a series of Flash animations introducing children to the art of Chinese calligraphy.
- Product design
- With a deep bench of gifted photographers, GDI sought to produce a line of note cards displaying original images of Asia. Dayspring provided graphic design expertise, project management and editorial services, as well as complete product design and printing oversight.
To support the entire line of travel books and gifts, Dayspring developed ThingsAsianPress.com, a Web site displaying product information for reviewers, book sellers and distributors.
